Application Guide for International Chinese Language Teachers (Confucius Institute) Scholarship Online Study Program 2021 in Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU)


For the purpose of cultivating qualified Chinese language teachers and facilitating the promotion of Chinese language and culture, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (CIH) will continue with the International Chinese Language Teachers (Confucius Institute) Scholarship. Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, certain HSK test centers, Chinese language (education) departments of foreign universities, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (collectively “recommending institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and currently-employed Chinese language teachers to study International Chinese Language Education or related majors in Chinese universities and colleges (“host universities”).

Founded in 1941, BFSU is a prestigious university in China under the direct leadership of the Chinese Ministry of Education. It is one of China’s top universities listed under the Project 985 and Project 211, both comprising top universities in China. BFSU is one of China’s oldest language universities. It has the longest history among universities of its kind in China, offering a complete range of degrees, diplomas and programs at various levels, with the largest number of foreign language programs in the country. BFSU was the first in China to recruit and teach foreign students, and was also one of the earliest to provide under- and postgraduate programs teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages.

Today, BFSU teaches 121 foreign languages and 101 bachelor degree programs. Excellence in the teaching and research of foreign language and literature has allowed BFSU to enjoy a good reputation for its quality programs, both at home and internationally. In the past 79 years, over 90,000 people have graduated from BFSU. BFSU now serves as an important education base for qualified professionals with language competence, who, after graduation, work as diplomats, translators/interpreters, businessmen, journalists, lawyers, bankers, etc. For example, among BFSU alumni who work or have worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we have over 400 ambassadors and over 1000 counselors. BFSU is thus known as the “Cradle of Diplomats”.

Currently, BFSU offers two types of International Chinese Language Teachers (Confucius Institute) scholarship programs: One-Academic-Year Online Study Program and One-Semester Online Study Program. Teachers and trainers for the programs are all from the School of Chinese Language and Literature (SCLL), Beijing Foreign Studies University.  

SCLL is a highly international school, made up of three parts, namely, Department of Chinese Language and LiteratureDepartment of Chinese as Second Language, and Chinese Language Training Center. All the programs in the School are open to international students. SCLL provides a platform of cross-cultural exchange for international and Chinese students so that they can study in the same school and same classroom, strengthening their learning ability and cross-cultural communication skills.


Program introduction

SCLL training programs for international students open at the beginning of spring and autumn semesters every year, with 18 weeks of classes each semester. The trainees are classified according to their Chinese proficiency into ten grades at basic, intermediate or advanced levels, the Students are taught in small classes of about 15, focusing on training in listening and speaking. Every semester, the Chinese Training Center offers 2 to 3 compulsory courses and 10 selective courses for students of all levels.

ELIGIBILITY

All applicants shall be:

1. Non-Chinese citizens.

2. In good Physical and mental condition, well performed both academically and behaviorally

3. Dedicated to work on Chinese language education, teaching or international promotion of Chinese language.

4. 16-35 years old (by March 1st, 2021).


Qualifications

一.Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study

The program commences in March 2021, and provides scholarship for a maximum of eleven months.

International students currently studying in China are not eligible.

Chinese Language Study Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on HSK test (Level 3) or score of 180 on HSK test (Level 4) or (Level 5). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

二.Scholarship for One-Semester Study

The program commences either in March 2021, and provides scholarship of a maximum of five months.

Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible.

TCSOL, Chinese Language and Literature Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on HSK test (Level 3), and an   HSKK test score is required

Online registration will be available from today on the Confucius Institute Scholarship website (cis.chinese.cn). Please log on to find recommendation institutions and host institutions(Beijing Foreign Studies University. Submit application documents online, track the application progress, feedback of review and admission results.


Application Documents

1. Electronic photo.

2. A scanned copy of passport photo page.

3..A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity).

4. A reference letter.


Scholarship Coverage

The scholarship covers tuition fee.

Disclaimer

1.Incomplete or unqualified applications will not be processed.

2.Applicants will be disqualified from application in case of fraudulent application materials or application materials are completed and submitted by someone else.
